A natural, effective, aluminium-free deodorant is something I’ve been seeking for years. Even better would be a natural, effective, aluminum-free antiperspirant.
Unfortunately, that is not what this post is about.
My initial search was rooted in unfounded fears about aluminum causing cancer because it temporarily plugs sweat glands. Now, it’s turned into a search for something that’s natural for natural-ness’ sake.
It’s a journey which is still in progress, but here’s what I’ve discovered so far. Here’s the low-down on three types of natural deodorant.
Tom’s of Maine Original Care Unscented:
This deodorant has a nice list of things I love about it.
It’s not tested on animals, no artificial nasties, high recycle-ability and Tom’s employees spend 12 days of work a year volunteering.
What I don’t love about it is that it doesn’t last 24 hours.
This deodorant goes on like a regular stick deodorant, but slightly creamier. It’s best put on right out of the shower.
However, it doesn’t keep me stink-free, even when I’m not a sweaty mess.
Let me tell you a little story. I had a merino wool sweater which I donated after two wearings because on rainy days it smelled like cat pee.
It wasn’t the merino wool sweater. It wasn’t the rain.
It was my lemongrass scented Tom’s deodorant.
Yeah, don’t do it.
Crystal Essence solid:
This deodorant has two large claims to fame: it will last you literally a year and it has only one ingredient.
It’s Potassium alum (natural mineral salts).
It works by creating a barrier against bacteria (which is what causes the stinky pits). To apply, moisten the crystal and apply it clean pits.
The problem- it only works on freshly cleaned armpits. Don’t think you’re going to apply this to refresh the next morning. It last about 8-12 hours.
Crystal Essence Roll-On Lavender and White Tea:
This deodorant is like Crystal Essence solid 2.0. This one is a roll-on, so it comes pre-moistened and is scented. It smells lovely, but again, like its solid counterpart, it must be applied to clean armpits.
This lasts about 6-8 hours, no matter what the package says, and I found it to be less effective than the solid.
I am still on the lookout for a natural deodorant that doesn’t make me into a stinky ogre.
