Recipe: Fruit infused seltzer

Today’s recipe might seem very simple– that’s because it is. What the title doesn’t betray though, is how refreshing it is.

I was inspired to try this out after ordering umpteen amounts of Strawberry Acai Refreshers at Starbucks. They’re lower in calories than other drinks, but not necessarily in sugar. Also, what is a girl to do on a late hot night when more caffeine is the last thing she needs?

My answer to that is this recipe. Virtually no calorie tasty drink for those late summer mornings/afternoons/nights.

Fruit Infused Seltzer

Prep time: < 5 mins.            Yields: 1 serving           Calories: 0-30

  • 6 oz. zero-calorie seltzer, plain or berry-flavored
  • 1/4 cup freeze dried fruit of choice, such as strawberries or blueberries

  • Pour seltzer into 8 oz. bottle or glass; add fruit as desired.
  • Stir, or cover container and tilt bottle gently to combine.
  • Enjoy!

This deceptively simple treat is super refreshing, if I haven’t make that clear before. When the freeze-dried fruit is combined with the seltzer, the carbonation seems to encourage the fruit to infuse more quickly in the beverage, making it enjoyable right away.

My favorite so far is plain seltzer with strawberries and blueberries, though recently I’ve come upon honeycrisp apple-flavored seltzer, which I’d love to sneak some apple slices into.

I purchase my dried fruit at Trader Joes, but any freeze dried fruit (or fresh if you can’t find it) will liven up your seltzer with little to no added calories.

What’s your favorite combination?
